Cleanup Acrylic Paint and So Much More Using Acetone

Acetone has some interesting uses in arts & crafts. So if you’re like me and already keep a supply of bulk acetone around for various household uses or if you’re just getting started exploring this fantastic household resource, you should also add some acetone to your arts & craft supplies list.

In general, Acetone is a highly effective thinner and remover for epoxy resins, ink, adhesives, and lacquers. It thins and cleans fiberglass resins. Acetone evaporates quickly, and leaves no residue. Acetone can also be used for or acrylic paint cleanup, or to clean up dried latex paint, uncured lacquers, and adhesives. As always follow all safety precautions.

In addition to acetones usual use as a DIY solvent, and as a tool in the world of nail arts, I have uncovered some really fun and creative uses in the arts & crafts universe, I hope to try more of these out in the near future. I look forward to reading your comments on any of these projects and please contact us directly if you have any of your own ideas and projects we can add to the blog.

Create Your Own Wine Cork Candles

You can recycle your old wine corks while creating a festive outdoor atmosphere. These DIY wine cork candles are so incredibly easy and super cheap.

Soak the corks in a capped mason jar filled with acetone for a week. Once the corks are soaked let them dry fully before using. When you’re ready to burn, well for starts, do it outside, then light it and watch it go. And definitely place it in a nice steady candle holder.

Here’s some random Acetone Arts & Crafts tips and tricks that we’ve come across.

Thinning Rubber Cement with Acetone

Acetone is a non-toxic substance that can be used to effectively thin out the rubber cement and prevent it from hardening and clumping. If you have a new bottle of rubber cement, you’ll have to dump out about 1/8 of the rubber cement. Pour a few teaspoons of acetone directly into the rubber cement bottle. Replace the cap on the bottle and shake the contents thoroughly. Add another teaspoon or two, depending on how thinned out you want your rubber cement.

Cleaning Acrylic Paint from Clothing

For acrylic paint removal from clothes use a cotton ball or the tip of a washcloth saturated in acetone and press it on the stain. Hold it in place for a few minutes to let the acetone begin to break it down. When it’s loose enough to scrape, try to get the dry bits off, then wipe those bits away. Rinse out the acetone with water before washing.

How to Clean Resin Cups

Learning how to clean epoxy resin tools and cups is not only a great way to save money, but it’s also a thoughtful way to reduce the amount of waste you produce when making resin art, jewelry and crafts.

Step 1: Wipe clean

Wipe off liquids with a paper towel. Clean up as much as you possibly can while the resin is still wet. Once it gets sticky and starts to cure, the paper towel will stick to the resin.

Step 2: Wipe with acetone

Clean the surface with r acetone. This will remove the remaining residue.

Safety tip: Wear nitrile gloves when you do this.

Step 3: Wash the cups

Wash your cups and tools with quality soap and water. Flip upside and allow to dry on a towel.

Acetone is a great multipurpose cleaner, disinfectant, and now it can also be a p art of your Arts & Crafts supply kit. Buy a good quality acetone in bulk and you’ll not only save money but you’ll always have s supply handy to clean up during and after projects.
