Create Your Own Nail Polish Remover

Add your own moisturizer to create a money saving nail polish remover at home or at your salon.

There are endless sources of recipes for homemade DIY nail polish remover, all of them claiming that you can avoid the acetone found in commercial nail polish remover. Many of them openly admit that nail polish remover without acetone is not as effective as acetone based removers. While the claim that acetone may dry out the nail and skin is true, there is a way to make your own nail polish remover that has a pleasant scent and moisturizing properties. It’s by adding your own ingredients to pure bulk acetone and creating your own unique, low cost nail polish remover. Nail salons can even create their own branded product to use in their salons.

The Olive Oil Secret

One of the best kept secrets in the fashion and beauty world is to add olive oil to your nail polish remover. By adding olive oil you’re replenishing your nails with the vitamins and moisture that the remover is well, removing. A recommendation that worked for me is to use a 5% oil to acetone ratio. This means you will add 5ml of oil for every 100 ml of acetone, or approximately 1.6 ounces of oil for every 32 ounces of acetone. Others have reported using more or less olive oil so you should experiment and see what works best on your skin. Always make sure to shake well before each use as the two products will separate after standing.

Recipe for Creating Your Custom Nail Polish Remover

There are several indie product makers creating pre-made acetone additives to be used with 100% acetone. I have not tried them, but they all claim to work well, and I have no reason to believe that they wouldn’t. I’ma DIY girl though and I prefer to make my own to save as much money as possible and have the freedom to custom make each batch to my liking. Here’s a great recipe to get you started on making your own DIY nail polish remover.

You will need:

  • 100% Pure Acetone – buy in bulk in gallons or more!
  • Pure Glycerin – also available in bulk or from any local drug store.
  • Spring water – any type of spring or purified water is fine.
  • Your favorite scented oils, I use lavender and lemongrass but you choose your own favorites

In a glass or acetone safe container with lid combine:

  • 4 oz (about 120 ml) Acetone
  • 15 ml glycerin
  • 18 ml water
  • Several drops of each of your favorite scented oils (you’ll need dto experiment as fragrance strengths vary).

Vigorously shake the combined mixture until the oil and acetone combine. Shake again before each use.

Nail salons can scale this recipe up to create quarts or gallons at a time. Print your own labels with your salon name and logo and put them on the containers to impress the clients in your salon.

There you have it! A safe, effective, low cost DIY nail polish remover that will help keep your nails and skin moisturized. Enjoy!
